Symptoms

  • Difficulty starting a diesel engine at low temperatures
  • Check Engine Light
  • White smoke on cold start
  • Unstable engine operation after starting
  • The glow plug indicator is on

Causes

  • Control wire short circuit to ground
  • Broken or damaged control circuit wiring
  • GPCM module malfunction
  • Faulty glow plug (internal short circuit)
  • Oxidation or damage to connectors

How to Fix

  1. Read OBD-II codes and capture a freeze frame
  2. Inspect the wiring and connectors of the cylinder 4 spark plug and the GPCM
  3. Measure the voltage in the cylinder 4 spark plug control circuit
  4. Check the resistance of the glow plug (normal: 0.5–2 Ohm)
  5. Check the circuit for short circuit to ground
  6. If the wiring is working properly, diagnose and replace the GPCM
