Symptoms

  • Difficulty starting a diesel engine in cold weather
  • Check Engine Light
  • White smoke on cold start
  • Unstable idle after starting
  • Glow plug indicator

Causes

  • Control wire short circuit to ground
  • Damaged or broken wiring
  • GPCM module malfunction
  • Faulty glow plug cylinder 5
  • Oxidation of control circuit connectors

How to Fix

  1. Read OBD-II codes
  2. Inspect the wiring and connectors of the cylinder 5 spark plug and GPCM
  3. Measure the voltage in the control circuit
  4. Check the resistance of the glow plug (normal: 0.5–2 Ohm)
  5. Check the circuit for short to ground
  6. If in good condition - diagnostics and replacement of GPCM
