Symptoms

  • Difficulty starting a diesel engine at low temperatures
  • Check Engine Light
  • White smoke on cold start
  • Unstable engine operation
  • Glow plug indicator on the dashboard

Causes

  • Short circuit of the control wire to power (+12 V)
  • Open ground circuit
  • GPCM module malfunction
  • Damage to wiring or connectors
  • Internal ECU fault

How to Fix

  1. Read OBD-II codes and capture a freeze frame
  2. Inspect the wiring and connectors of cylinder 5 spark plug and GPCM module
  3. Measure the voltage in the spark plug control circuit
  4. Check the ground circuit for open circuit
  5. Check signal wire for short to power
  6. If serviceable - diagnostics and replacement of GPCM or ECU
