Symptoms

- Check Engine Light
- White smoke on cold start
- Unstable engine operation
- Glow plug indicator on the dashboard
Causes
- Short circuit of the control wire to power (+12 V)
- Open ground circuit
- GPCM module malfunction
- Damage to wiring or connectors
- Internal ECU fault
How to Fix
- Read OBD-II codes and capture a freeze frame
- Inspect the wiring and connectors of cylinder 5 spark plug and GPCM module
- Measure the voltage in the spark plug control circuit
- Check the ground circuit for open circuit
- Check signal wire for short to power
- If serviceable - diagnostics and replacement of GPCM or ECU
