Approx. repair cost
$11–222 (est.)

Symptoms

  • Check Engine light on
  • Tachometer shows zero or unrealistic rpm
  • Unstable operation of the automatic transmission
  • Incorrect operation of cruise control
  • Incorrect readings of external instruments (tachograph, etc.)

Causes

  • RPM output wire short to ground
  • Faulty load (tachometer, automatic transmission module)
  • Broken or damaged wire
  • Internal fault in the ECU output stage
  • Output overload due to multiple connected devices

How to Fix

  1. Identify the RPM output on the ECU connector using the wiring diagram
  2. Measure the output voltage with the engine running
  3. Disconnect the load (tachometer connector, gearbox) and check the change in signal level
  4. Check the output wire for a short to ground.
  5. Measure the load created by each consumer
  6. If external circuits are in good working order, diagnose the ECU
