Severity
⚠️ MediumCan you drive?
Do not drive — repair immediately
Approx. repair cost
$11–222 (est.)
Symptoms
- Check Engine light on
- Tachometer shows zero or unrealistic rpm
- Unstable operation of the automatic transmission
- Incorrect operation of cruise control
- Incorrect readings of external instruments (tachograph, etc.)
Causes
- RPM output wire short to ground
- Faulty load (tachometer, automatic transmission module)
- Broken or damaged wire
- Internal fault in the ECU output stage
- Output overload due to multiple connected devices
How to Fix
- Identify the RPM output on the ECU connector using the wiring diagram
- Measure the output voltage with the engine running
- Disconnect the load (tachometer connector, gearbox) and check the change in signal level
- Check the output wire for a short to ground.
- Measure the load created by each consumer
- If external circuits are in good working order, diagnose the ECU
