P06EE

Engine RPM Output Circuit High

Severity
⚠️ Medium
Can you drive?
Do not drive — repair immediately
Approx. repair cost
$11–222 (est.)

Symptoms

  • Tachometer shows high speed
  • Check Engine light on
  • Incorrect automatic transmission operation (early shifts)
  • Incorrect tachograph or external instrument readings
  • Possible unstable operation of systems that depend on the RPM signal

Causes

  • Shorting the RPM output wire to a higher voltage circuit
  • Internal fault in the ECU output stage
  • Poor ECU grounding
  • Insulation failure in the wiring harness
  • Faulty consumer generating reverse voltage

How to Fix

  1. Measure the voltage at the RPM output while the engine is running.
  2. Disconnect the load and measure again - if the voltage is high without load, the problem is in the ECU
  3. Check the wiring harness for shorts between the RPM wire and adjacent wires.
  4. Check ECU grounding
  5. Inspect the consumer connectors (tachometer, gearbox, cruise control)
  6. If there is an internal fault in the ECU, send it for repair.
