Symptoms

  • Incorrect display of selector position on the dashboard
  • The vehicle may not start in 'P' or 'N' position
  • The transmission may not shift correctly
  • A transmission fault message may appear.
  • The gear selector may be stiff or sticky

Causes

  • Malfunction of one of the parking position sensors
  • Problems with sensor wiring or connectors
  • Mechanical wear or damage to the gear shift mechanism
  • Contamination or corrosion of sensor contacts
  • Transmission control module (TCM) problems

How to Fix

  1. Check the actual readings of sensors A and B with a diagnostic scanner
  2. Inspect the wiring and sensor connectors for damage
  3. Check the gear shift mechanism for wear
  4. If necessary, replace the faulty position sensor
  5. Reflash or replace the transmission control unit if necessary
