Symptoms

  • Reverse gear does not engage
  • Gear indicator flashing on the dashboard
  • The gearbox goes into emergency mode
  • Clicking or knocking noises from the gearbox area when trying to engage reverse
  • Check Engine light comes on

Causes

  • Short circuit in actuator circuit
  • Broken or damaged wiring harness
  • Reverse solenoid valve malfunction
  • Transmission control module (TCM) problems
  • Corrosion of contacts in connectors

How to Fix

  1. Check the integrity of the wiring harness to the actuator
  2. Measure the resistance of the actuator circuit
  3. Check the voltage at the actuator connectors
  4. Replace faulty solenoid valve
  5. Scan the TCM for errors
