Symptoms

  • Incorrect temperature readings on the dashboard
  • Problems turning on the cooling fan
  • Deteriorating fuel economy
  • Unstable engine operation at idle
  • Possible appearance of the Check Engine indicator

Causes

  • Malfunction of coolant temperature sensor No. 2
  • Open or short circuit in the sensor circuit
  • Poor contact in the sensor connector
  • Corroded contacts or damaged wiring
  • Malfunction of the engine control unit (rare)

How to Fix

  1. Check the condition of the sensor and its connector
  2. Check the integrity of the wiring to the sensor
  3. Measure sensor resistance at different temperatures
  4. If necessary, replace the coolant temperature sensor
  5. Reset the error code and check if it appears again
