Symptoms

  • Flashing 4WD light on dashboard
  • Inability to switch between drive modes (2WD, 4H, 4L)
  • System gets stuck in one drive mode
  • Reduced dynamics or strange behavior of the car when driving
  • Other related trouble codes may appear

Causes

  • Faulty transfer case range position sensor
  • Open or short circuit in range signal circuit
  • Problems with the solenoid valve or mode switching motor
  • Mechanical faults in the linkage of the transfer case
  • Four-wheel drive control module or TCM malfunction

How to Fix

  1. Read fault codes and freeze frame data using a scanner
  2. Visually inspect the wiring harness and sensor/module connectors for damage.
  3. Check the resistance and reference voltage of the range position sensor
  4. Check operation of solenoid valves or shift actuators
  5. If necessary, replace the position sensor or control module
