Symptoms

  • Inability to switch from 'P' mode without emergency unlocking
  • The 'Check Engine' light is on
  • Transmission fault message on the instrument panel
  • Car won't start (starter blocked)
  • Clicks or extraneous sounds from the automatic transmission selector area

Causes

  • Open or short circuit in the actuator circuit
  • Lockout solenoid valve malfunction
  • Problems with the relay or circuit fuse
  • Mechanical failure of the actuator or parking pawl
  • Error in the transmission control module (TCM)

How to Fix

  1. Check fuses and relays associated with the interlock system
  2. Diagnose the actuator control circuit for open and short circuit
  3. Check the resistance and operation of the solenoid valve
  4. Inspect mechanical interlock components for wear
  5. If necessary, replace the actuator or parking mechanism
  6. Flash or replace the TCM module if errors are detected
