Symptoms

  • The parking brake does not hold the car securely
  • The EPB malfunction indicator on the dashboard is on
  • The car pulls to the left when the parking brake is applied
  • Inability to engage or disengage the parking brake
  • Parking brake error message on display

Causes

  • Broken wiring to the right electric parking brake
  • Rubbing the wire on suspension or body parts
  • Disconnection of the electric drive connector (vibration, corrosion)
  • Drive motor winding broken
  • Mechanical damage to the drive (water, dirt)

How to Fix

  1. Read EPB System Error Codes with a Diagnostic Scanner
  2. Inspect the right electric drive connector - it may simply be disconnected
  3. Check the integrity of the wiring from the control unit to the drive
  4. Measure the resistance of the motor winding (infinity = open)
  5. Trace the routing of the wiring harness - check for chafing
  6. Restore the wiring or replace the electric drive
  7. After repair, perform EPB calibration
