Causes
- Exhaust valve control solenoid malfunction
- Broken or damaged wiring to the solenoid
- Short circuit in solenoid circuit
- Oxidation or corrosion of connectors
- Solenoid contaminated with engine oil or carbon deposits
- Engine control module (ECM) malfunction
- Low engine oil pressure
- Using the wrong engine oil
How to Fix
- Connect a diagnostic scanner and read all error codes
- Check the level and condition of the engine oil
- Visually inspect the solenoid wiring and connectors for damage.
- Measure the resistance of the exhaust valve control solenoid (usually 6-30 ohms)
- Check the power at the solenoid connector (usually 12V)
- Clean connectors from oxidation and corrosion
- Replace exhaust valve control solenoid if necessary
- Check and, if necessary, repair damaged wiring
- Clear error codes and test drive
- Recheck the system with a diagnostic scanner
