Symptoms

Causes

  • Exhaust valve control solenoid malfunction
  • Broken or damaged wiring to the solenoid
  • Short circuit in solenoid circuit
  • Oxidation or corrosion of connectors
  • Solenoid contaminated with engine oil or carbon deposits
  • Engine control module (ECM) malfunction
  • Low engine oil pressure
  • Using the wrong engine oil

How to Fix

  1. Connect a diagnostic scanner and read all error codes
  2. Check the level and condition of the engine oil
  3. Visually inspect the solenoid wiring and connectors for damage.
  4. Measure the resistance of the exhaust valve control solenoid (usually 6-30 ohms)
  5. Check the power at the solenoid connector (usually 12V)
  6. Clean connectors from oxidation and corrosion
  7. Replace exhaust valve control solenoid if necessary
  8. Check and, if necessary, repair damaged wiring
  9. Clear error codes and test drive
  10. Recheck the system with a diagnostic scanner
