PCV Regulator Valve Control Circuit High

Severity
⚠️ Medium
Can you drive?
Limited driving only, diagnose soon
Approx. repair cost
$22–89 (est.)

Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light Is On
  • Unstable engine idling
  • Increased oil consumption or oil leakage
  • Contamination of the intake tract and throttle valve
  • The appearance of white or blue smoke from the exhaust pipe
  • Oily deposits in the crankcase ventilation hose

Causes

  • Short circuit of the PCV valve control wire to the power circuit (+12 V)
  • Damage to the insulation of the wiring harness in the high temperature area of the engine
  • Faulty connector with shorted power and control contacts
  • Internal short circuit of the valve to the body when powered through a common bus
  • Malfunction of the ECU output stage (rare)

How to Fix

  1. Read fault codes and record all active and stored codes
  2. Disconnect the PCV valve connector and measure the voltage on the control wire - in a normal circuit it should be 0 V when the valve is disconnected
  3. If the voltage remains high, test the wire for a short to power supply.
  4. Inspect the wiring harness in the engine area: look for melted insulation, pinched areas, contact with hot parts
  5. Repair the insulation damage or replace the section of the harness
  6. After repair, reset the codes and make sure the PCV system is working correctly
