Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light and Parking Brake Light Illuminates
  • The parking brake warning light is constantly on or off
  • Disabling Hill Start Assist
  • Inability of the Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) to engage or release
  • Brake warning on display

Causes

  • Faulty parking brake switch (mechanical damage or worn contacts)
  • Broken or shorted wiring in the area of the parking brake lever
  • Moisture ingress and corrosion of the switch connector
  • Malfunction of the EPB control unit (in systems with electronic parking brake)
  • Incorrect adjustment of the switch after repair of the brake system

How to Fix

  1. Read fault codes; for EPB systems - use the diagnostic functions of the EPB unit
  2. Inspect the parking brake switch and its connector for mechanical damage, moisture, and corrosion.
  3. Check the presence of power and ground at the switch connector with the ignition on
  4. Measure the resistance of the switch in both positions (brake on / off)
  5. Check the signal wire from the switch to the ECU for open and short circuits
  6. Replace the switch or repair the wiring; for EPB - follow manufacturer's procedure
