P05E5

Park Brake Sensor/Switch Circuit High

Severity
⚠️ Medium
Can you drive?
Limited driving only, diagnose soon
Approx. repair cost
$17–89 (est.)

Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light Is On
  • The parking brake indicator does not light up even when the brake is on.
  • Or the indicator is constantly on when the brake is released
  • Failure of the starting assistant on a slope
  • In EPB systems - loss of parking brake control

Causes

  • Short circuit of the signal wire of the switch to the power wire (+12 V)
  • Damage to the insulation of the wiring harness with contact between the signal and supply wires
  • Internal fault of the switch with constant power supply to the signal output
  • Corrosion of the connector with the formation of a parasitic path to the power supply
  • Malfunction of the EPB control unit (in systems with electronic parking brake)

How to Fix

  1. Read all fault codes; for EPB - use a specialized scanner that supports this system
  2. Measure the voltage on the signal wire of the switch with the ignition on
  3. Disconnect the switch connector: if the voltage drops to zero, there is a short circuit inside the switch; if it remains high, there is a short in the harness
  4. Test the signal wire for a short with the power wire (+12 V)
  5. Inspect the harness in the area of the parking brake lever and half the space under the console
  6. Replace the switch or fix the short in the wiring
