Park Brake Sensor/Switch Circuit High
Severity
⚠️ MediumCan you drive?
Limited driving only, diagnose soon
Approx. repair cost
$17–89 (est.)
Symptoms
- Check Engine Light Is On
- The parking brake indicator does not light up even when the brake is on.
- Or the indicator is constantly on when the brake is released
- Failure of the starting assistant on a slope
- In EPB systems - loss of parking brake control
Causes
- Short circuit of the signal wire of the switch to the power wire (+12 V)
- Damage to the insulation of the wiring harness with contact between the signal and supply wires
- Internal fault of the switch with constant power supply to the signal output
- Corrosion of the connector with the formation of a parasitic path to the power supply
- Malfunction of the EPB control unit (in systems with electronic parking brake)
How to Fix
- Read all fault codes; for EPB - use a specialized scanner that supports this system
- Measure the voltage on the signal wire of the switch with the ignition on
- Disconnect the switch connector: if the voltage drops to zero, there is a short circuit inside the switch; if it remains high, there is a short in the harness
- Test the signal wire for a short with the power wire (+12 V)
- Inspect the harness in the area of the parking brake lever and half the space under the console
- Replace the switch or fix the short in the wiring
