Symptoms
- Check Engine Light Is On
- Possible noise from hydraulic timing elements during cold start
- Unstable operation of the variable valve timing system
- Unstable idling when the engine is cold
- Increased oil consumption in some cases
Causes
- Broken valve control circuit wiring
- Oxidation or damage to the valve connector
- Faulty solenoid valve (winding break)
- Valve clogged with oil (carbon deposits, dirt)
- ECU malfunction (rare)
How to Fix
- Read error codes, check for oil pressure or VVT codes
- Inspect the bypass valve connector, check the contacts
- Measure the valve winding resistance (standard: 10–30 ohms)
- Check the wiring from the valve to the computer for breaks
- Check the oil pressure (normal pressure is a sign of good mechanics)
- Replace the oil system bypass valve
