Approx. repair cost
$33–133 (est.)

Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light Is On
  • Possible noise from hydraulic timing elements during cold start
  • Unstable operation of the variable valve timing system
  • Unstable idling when the engine is cold
  • Increased oil consumption in some cases

Causes

  • Broken valve control circuit wiring
  • Oxidation or damage to the valve connector
  • Faulty solenoid valve (winding break)
  • Valve clogged with oil (carbon deposits, dirt)
  • ECU malfunction (rare)

How to Fix

  1. Read error codes, check for oil pressure or VVT codes
  2. Inspect the bypass valve connector, check the contacts
  3. Measure the valve winding resistance (standard: 10–30 ohms)
  4. Check the wiring from the valve to the computer for breaks
  5. Check the oil pressure (normal pressure is a sign of good mechanics)
  6. Replace the oil system bypass valve
