Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light Is On
  • Noise from hydraulic timing chains
  • Unstable operation of VVT (variable valve timing)
  • Increased or decreased oil pressure
  • Knock when starting engine cold

Causes

  • Valve control wire short to ground
  • Short circuit of valve internal winding
  • Damage to wiring insulation (pinching on metal)
  • Moisture entering the valve connector
  • ECU output stage malfunction

How to Fix

  1. Read codes, record operating parameters
  2. Disconnect the bypass valve connector and measure the resistance of its winding
  3. Check the resistance of the control wire to ground (with the ECU connector disconnected)
  4. Inspect the wiring for pinched or damaged insulation.
  5. Check the connector for moisture and oxidation
  6. Replace the valve or eliminate short circuit in the wiring
