Engine Oil Bypass Valve Control Circuit High

Severity
⚠️ Medium
Can you drive?
Limited driving only, diagnose soon
Approx. repair cost
$33–167 (est.)

Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light Is On
  • Possible knocking of hydraulic tappets during startup
  • Unstable operation of the VVT system
  • Increased oil pressure in some modes
  • Possible overheating of the ECU control transistor

Causes

  • Short circuit of the control circuit to the power line (+12V)
  • Internal defect in the valve winding (breakdown to the body)
  • Damage to the wire insulation (touching the positive bus)
  • ECU control transistor malfunction
  • Faulty relay in the control circuit

How to Fix

  1. Read codes, fix parameters
  2. Disconnect the valve connector, check the voltage on the control wire with the ignition on
  3. Check the control wire for short circuit to the positive bus (from the connector to the ECU)
  4. Inspect the wiring for contact with hot surfaces and positive tires
  5. Measure the resistance of the valve winding (short circuit - close to zero)
  6. Eliminate short circuit or replace valve
