Generator Field/F Terminal Circuit Low

Symptoms

  • The Check Engine light comes on
  • Charging voltage is below normal (less than 13.5 V)
  • Slow battery discharge when the engine is running
  • The battery light on the dashboard comes on
  • Reduced lighting brightness under high load

Causes

  • Short circuit of terminal F wire to ground
  • Voltage regulator malfunction (low signal)
  • Open circuit in control circuit with short to ground
  • Poor contact in terminal F connector
  • Internal ECU malfunction (low output signal)

How to Fix

  1. Measure the charging voltage with the engine running
  2. Measure the voltage at terminal F of the generator with the engine running.
  3. Check terminal F wire for short to ground
  4. Check the generator connector - clean the contacts
  5. Check the voltage regulator - replace if faulty
  6. Measure the ECU output voltage on the control wire
