Symptoms

  • Difficulty starting a diesel engine at low temperatures
  • The Check Engine light comes on
  • White smoke from the exhaust pipe during cold start
  • Unstable idle after starting in cold weather
  • Glow plug indicator on the dashboard

Causes

  • Burnt out glow plug cylinder 2
  • Broken glow plug power wire
  • Oxidation or damage to the spark plug connector
  • GPCM module malfunction
  • Damage to the wiring from the GPCM to the spark plug

How to Fix

  1. Read error codes with OBD-II scanner
  2. Measure the resistance of the glow plug of cylinder 2 (standard: 0.5–2 Ohm)
  3. Inspect the wiring and spark plug connector for damage and oxidation.
  4. Check the voltage at the spark plug terminal when the ignition is turned on.
  5. Replace a faulty glow plug
  6. Check the GPCM module if the error appears again
