Symptoms
- Difficulty starting a diesel engine at low temperatures
- The Check Engine light comes on
- White smoke from the exhaust pipe during cold start
- Unstable engine operation after a cold start
- The glow plug icon is lit on the dashboard
Causes
- Burnt out or worn glow plug for cylinder 1
- Broken glow plug lead wire
- Oxidation or poor contact in the spark plug connector
- Relay or GPCM faulty
- Damage to the wiring from the GPCM to the glow plug
How to Fix
- Read error codes with OBD-II scanner
- Measure the resistance of the glow plug of cylinder 1 with a multimeter (norm: 0.5–2 Ohm; break - infinity)
- Visually inspect the wiring and glow plug connector for cylinder 1
- Check the voltage at the spark plug contact when the ignition is turned on.
- Replace the glow plug of cylinder 1 if its malfunction is confirmed.
- Check and if necessary replace the GPCM
