Symptoms

  • Difficult or impossible cold starting of the engine
  • White smoke from exhaust pipe when starting
  • Check Engine Light Is On
  • Unstable engine operation on a cold engine
  • Increased starter operating time

Causes

  • Short circuit to ground in the glow plug circuit of cylinder 10
  • Faulty (burnt out) glow plug of cylinder 10
  • Damage to control circuit wiring or connector
  • Faulty relay or glow plug control module
  • Oxidation of ECU connector contacts

How to Fix

  1. Read all error codes using a diagnostic scanner
  2. Inspect the wiring and glow plug connector for cylinder 10
  3. Measure the resistance of the glow plug (standard 0.5–2 Ohm), replace if necessary
  4. Check glow plug relay, replace if faulty
  5. Check the wires from the ECU to the spark plug for opens and shorts
  6. Reset error codes, perform control check
