Symptoms
- Check Engine Light Illuminates
- Increased fuel consumption
- Unstable engine operation at idle
- Reduced engine power
- Black smoke from the exhaust pipe
- Smell of unburned fuel in the exhaust
Causes
- Break or short circuit in the heater wiring
- Oxidation or corrosion of oxygen sensor connectors
- Failure of the sensor heating element
- Blown heating circuit fuse
- Engine ECU malfunction
- Damage to the sensor ground wire
- Wear of the oxygen sensor itself
How to Fix
- Read and record all fault codes using a scanner
- Check the oxygen sensor heating circuit fuses
- Visually inspect the sensor wiring and connectors for damage.
- Measure the resistance of the heating element (should be 2-14 Ohms)
- Check the supply voltage at the sensor connector (should be 12V)
- Check the sensor ground circuit for an open circuit.
- If necessary, replace damaged wiring or connectors
- Replace the oxygen sensor if the heater fails
- Clear fault codes and test drive
