Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light Illuminates
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Unstable engine operation at idle
  • Reduced engine power
  • Black smoke from the exhaust pipe
  • Smell of unburned fuel in the exhaust

Causes

  • Break or short circuit in the heater wiring
  • Oxidation or corrosion of oxygen sensor connectors
  • Failure of the sensor heating element
  • Blown heating circuit fuse
  • Engine ECU malfunction
  • Damage to the sensor ground wire
  • Wear of the oxygen sensor itself

How to Fix

  1. Read and record all fault codes using a scanner
  2. Check the oxygen sensor heating circuit fuses
  3. Visually inspect the sensor wiring and connectors for damage.
  4. Measure the resistance of the heating element (should be 2-14 Ohms)
  5. Check the supply voltage at the sensor connector (should be 12V)
  6. Check the sensor ground circuit for an open circuit.
  7. If necessary, replace damaged wiring or connectors
  8. Replace the oxygen sensor if the heater fails
  9. Clear fault codes and test drive
