Symptoms

  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Unstable operation at idle
  • Black smoke from the exhaust pipe
  • Whistling or unusual noises from the turbine
  • Check Engine Light Illuminates
  • Jerks when accelerating

Causes

  • Bypass valve actuator malfunction
  • Damage to the wiring to the actuator
  • Oxidation or corrosion of connectors
  • Bypass valve stuck
  • Rupture of vacuum hoses (for pneumatic systems)
  • Valve position sensor malfunction
  • Valve contaminated with carbon or oil
  • Valve mechanism wear

How to Fix

  1. Connect a diagnostic scanner and read all error codes
  2. Check the integrity of the wiring to the bypass valve actuator
  3. Inspect connectors for corrosion and oxidation
  4. Check the operation of the actuator using a multimeter
  5. Test the bypass valve for sticking
  6. Clean the valve from carbon deposits and dirt.
  7. If necessary, replace the actuator or the valve itself
  8. Check vacuum hoses and connections
  9. Clear error codes and test drive
  10. Recheck the system with a diagnostic scanner
