Symptoms

- Black smoke from the exhaust pipe
- Whistling or hissing sounds from the turbocharger
- Check Engine Light Illuminates
- Jerks during acceleration
Causes
- Short circuit in valve control circuit wiring
- Bypass valve actuator malfunction
- Damage to connectors or contacts
- Sticking or broken bypass valve mechanism
- ECM (engine control module) malfunction
- Broken or oxidized wires
- Oil or dirt getting into electrical connections
How to Fix
- Read all error codes using a diagnostic scanner
- Visually inspect the valve control circuit wiring and connectors
- Check the resistance of the bypass valve actuator with a multimeter
- Measure the supply voltage at the actuator connector
- Check the integrity of the wires from the ECM to the actuator
- Clean or replace damaged connectors
- If necessary, replace the bypass valve actuator
- Check the mechanical operation of the valve for sticking
- Clear error memory and test drive
- Rescan the system to confirm that the error has been resolved
