Symptoms

  • Significant reduction in engine power
  • Unusual whistling or metallic noise from the turbocharger area
  • Black or blue smoke from the exhaust pipe
  • Increased oil consumption
  • Unstable engine operation at idle
  • Activating limp mode
  • Increased engine temperature

Causes

  • Wastegate stuck or malfunctioning
  • Turbocharger actuator malfunction
  • Clogged or damaged turbocharger oil passages
  • Boost pressure sensor malfunction
  • Damage or wear of turbine bearings
  • Variable Geometry Turbine (VGT) control system malfunction
  • Clogged air filter or intake system
  • Malfunction of the electronic control unit of the turbocharger

How to Fix

  1. Connect a diagnostic scanner and read all error codes
  2. Check the level and condition of the engine oil
  3. Inspect the turbocharger for external damage and oil leaks
  4. Check the operation of the wastegate and its actuator
  5. Test the boost pressure sensor
  6. Check the condition of the air filter and intake system
  7. Check the turbocharger oil system
  8. If necessary, replace faulty components or the entire turbocharger
  9. Clear error codes and test drive to see if the problem is resolved
