Approx. repair cost
$33–133 (est.)

Symptoms

  • The Check Engine light is on; ABS, ESP, AEB warnings are possible
  • Disabled or incorrect operation of adaptive cruise control
  • Problems with enabling regenerative braking on hybrids
  • Inability to start the engine (if the brake is required)
  • Unstable operation of the automatic slope hold system

Causes

  • Short circuit of the signal wire of sensor B to the vehicle body
  • Break in the sensor reference voltage supply wire
  • Corrosion or damage to the sensor connector in the pedal unit area
  • Moisture getting under the pedal unit casing
  • Internal defect of brake pedal position sensor B

How to Fix

  1. Read all fault codes and pay attention to ABS/ESP/transmission codes
  2. Inspect the pedal block area for moisture, corrosion, and mechanical damage to the harness.
  3. Check the voltage on the signal wire of sensor B with the pedal released and pressed.
  4. Disconnect sensor connector B: if the signal rises, there is a short circuit inside the sensor; if not, there is a short in the wiring
  5. Check the sensor reference voltage supply wire for an open circuit.
  6. Repair short or replace brake pedal position sensor B
