Symptoms

  • Difficulty starting the engine at low temperatures
  • White smoke on cold start
  • Check Engine Light Is On
  • Increased fuel consumption during warm-up
  • Engine vibration when starting in cold weather

Causes

  • Broken wire in the glow plug control circuit for cylinder 9
  • Short circuit to power in the control circuit
  • Malfunction of the transistor switch of the spark plug control module
  • Oxidation or poor connector contact
  • Faulty glow plug relay

How to Fix

  1. Read error codes and record frozen frame parameters
  2. Inspect the wiring of the glow plug circuit of cylinder 9, identify insulation damage
  3. Check glow plug resistance (0.5–2 Ohm), replace if necessary
  4. Check for an open circuit using a multimeter (continuity test)
  5. Check relay and glow plug control module, replace if necessary
  6. Clean the connectors, eliminate identified faults, reset codes and check the result
