Symptoms

  • Slightly difficult engine starting at low temperatures
  • Check Engine Light Is On
  • Slight white smoke on cold start
  • Unstable engine operation when warming up in cold weather
  • Increased starter cranking time at low temperatures

Causes

  • Wear of the heating element of the glow plug of cylinder 7
  • Poor contact or oxidation of the glow plug connector
  • Partial damage to circuit wire insulation
  • Incipient failure of the relay or spark plug control module
  • Glow plug terminal corrosion

How to Fix

  1. Read error codes and record frozen frame data
  2. Measure the resistance of the glow plug of cylinder 7 (standard 0.5–2 Ohm)
  3. Inspect the spark plug connector and terminal for oxidation, clean the contacts
  4. Check the current through the spark plug when warming up using a current clamp
  5. Replace the glow plug if abnormal performance is confirmed
  6. Reset codes and make sure they are gone after replacement
