Symptoms

  • Unstable engine idling
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Difficulty starting the engine
  • Jerking when braking the engine
  • Check Engine Light Is On
  • Uneven engine operation when releasing gas

Causes

  • Break in the wiring to the fuel shut-off valve
  • Short circuit in valve control circuit
  • Fuel cut-off valve malfunction
  • Valve connector oxidized or damaged
  • Engine control module (ECM) malfunction
  • Wiring harness damage
  • Poor ground in valve circuit

How to Fix

  1. Connect the OBD scanner and read all error codes
  2. Check the fuel shutoff valve electrical connectors for corrosion or damage.
  3. Measure the resistance of the fuel shut-off valve with a multimeter
  4. Check the integrity of the wiring from the ECM to the valve
  5. Check the supply voltage at the valve with the engine running
  6. Replace faulty fuel shut-off valve if necessary
  7. Repair damaged wiring or connectors
  8. Clear error codes and test drive to check
  9. If necessary, replace the engine control unit
