Symptoms

  • Reduced engine power
  • Increased toxicity of exhaust gases
  • Difficulty starting a cold engine

Causes

  • Malfunction of the oxygen sensor heating element
  • Open or short circuit in sensor wiring
  • Oxidation or corrosion of connectors
  • Faulty relay or sensor circuit fuse
  • ECU damage (rare)
  • Mechanical damage to the sensor

How to Fix

  1. Read error codes with a scanner and record freeze frame data
  2. Check the fuses and relays of the oxygen sensor circuit
  3. Measure the resistance of the sensor heater (should be 2-14 Ohms)
  4. Check the integrity of the wiring from the ECU to the sensor
  5. Inspect connectors for corrosion and oxidation
  6. If necessary, replace the oxygen sensor
  7. Clear error codes and test drive
  8. Recheck for errors
