Symptoms
- Check Engine light comes on
- Increased fuel consumption
- Unstable idle speed
- Deterioration in acceleration dynamics
- Increased toxicity of exhaust gases
- Slowly warming up the engine to operating temperature
Causes
- Malfunction of the oxygen sensor heating element
- Open or short circuit in sensor wiring
- Corrosion of sensor connector contacts
- Oxygen sensor heater relay malfunction
- Problems in the heater power circuit
- Failure of the oxygen sensor itself
- Engine control unit malfunction
How to Fix
- Connect the OBD scanner and read all error codes
- Check the condition of the sensor heater circuit fuses
- Measure the resistance of the sensor heating element (standard 2-14 Ohms)
- Check the integrity of the wiring from the sensor to the ECU
- Inspect the sensor connector for corrosion and oxidation
- Check the supply voltage on the heater (should be 12V)
- If necessary, replace the oxygen sensor
- Clear error codes and test drive
- Recheck the system with a scanner
