Symptoms

  • Check Engine light comes on
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Unstable idle speed
  • Deterioration in acceleration dynamics
  • Increased toxicity of exhaust gases
  • Slowly warming up the engine to operating temperature

Causes

  • Malfunction of the oxygen sensor heating element
  • Open or short circuit in sensor wiring
  • Corrosion of sensor connector contacts
  • Oxygen sensor heater relay malfunction
  • Problems in the heater power circuit
  • Failure of the oxygen sensor itself
  • Engine control unit malfunction

How to Fix

  1. Connect the OBD scanner and read all error codes
  2. Check the condition of the sensor heater circuit fuses
  3. Measure the resistance of the sensor heating element (standard 2-14 Ohms)
  4. Check the integrity of the wiring from the sensor to the ECU
  5. Inspect the sensor connector for corrosion and oxidation
  6. Check the supply voltage on the heater (should be 12V)
  7. If necessary, replace the oxygen sensor
  8. Clear error codes and test drive
  9. Recheck the system with a scanner
