Symptoms

  • Increased fuel consumption

  • Deterioration in acceleration dynamics
  • Increased toxicity of exhaust gases

  • Difficulty starting a cold engine

Causes

  • Failure of the heating element of the oxygen sensor
  • Open or short circuit in heater wiring
  • Corrosion of sensor connector contacts
  • Oxygen sensor heater relay malfunction
  • Damaged heater circuit fuse
  • Engine control unit malfunction
  • Mechanical damage to the sensor

How to Fix

  1. Connect the diagnostic scanner and read the error codes
  2. Check the oxygen sensor heater circuit fuses.
  3. Measure the resistance of the sensor heating element (standard 2-14 Ohms)
  4. Check the integrity of the wiring from the sensor to the control unit
  5. Inspect the sensor connector for corrosion and damage.
  6. Check the heater supply voltage (should be 12V)
  7. If necessary, replace the oxygen sensor
  8. Clear error codes and test drive
  9. Recheck the system with a diagnostic scanner
