Symptoms

- Difficulty starting a cold engine
Causes
- Failure of the heating element of the oxygen sensor
- Open or short circuit in heater wiring
- Corrosion of sensor connector contacts
- Oxygen sensor heater relay malfunction
- Damaged heater circuit fuse
- Engine control unit malfunction
- Mechanical damage to the sensor
How to Fix
- Connect the diagnostic scanner and read the error codes
- Check the oxygen sensor heater circuit fuses.
- Measure the resistance of the sensor heating element (standard 2-14 Ohms)
- Check the integrity of the wiring from the sensor to the control unit
- Inspect the sensor connector for corrosion and damage.
- Check the heater supply voltage (should be 12V)
- If necessary, replace the oxygen sensor
- Clear error codes and test drive
- Recheck the system with a diagnostic scanner
