Symptoms
- The Check Engine light comes on on the dashboard
- Slight increase in fuel consumption
- Unstable engine idling in cold weather
- Deterioration in acceleration dynamics
- Increased toxicity of exhaust gases
Causes
- Open or short circuit in oxygen sensor heater wiring
- Faulty oxygen sensor with damaged heating element
- Oxidation or corrosion of sensor connector contacts
- Engine control module (ECM) malfunction
- Blown heater circuit fuse
- Poor ground or damaged ground wire
How to Fix
- Read error codes and analyze data using a diagnostic scanner
- Check the oxygen sensor heater circuit fuses.
- Visually inspect the wiring and connectors of the oxygen sensor for damage.
- Measure the resistance of the oxygen sensor heating element (should be 2-14 ohms)
- Check the supply voltage at the sensor connector (should be about 12V)
- Check the integrity of the wires between the sensor and the control unit
- If necessary, replace the oxygen sensor
- Clear error codes and test drive to verify troubleshooting
