$6–89 (est.)
Symptoms
- Increased fuel consumption
- Unstable engine idling
- Check Engine Light Illuminated
- Black smoke from the exhaust pipe
- Poor acceleration dynamics
- Smell of unburned fuel in the exhaust
Causes
- Open or short circuit in oxygen sensor heater wiring
- Oxidation or corrosion of sensor connectors
- Failure of the heating element inside the sensor
- Faulty heater circuit relay or fuse
- Damage to wiring due to high exhaust temperature
- Malfunction of the engine control unit (PCM/ECU)
- Mechanical damage to the sensor
How to Fix
- Connect a diagnostic scanner and read all error codes
- Check the condition of the fuses and relays of the engine management system
- Inspect the oxygen sensor connector for corrosion or damage.
- Measure the resistance of the sensor heater (should be 2-14 Ohms depending on the model)
- Check the supply voltage at the sensor connector (should be 12V)
- Check the wiring from the sensor connector to the control unit
- If necessary, replace the oxygen sensor
- Clear error codes and test drive
