Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light Illuminates
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Unstable engine idling
  • Difficulty starting a cold engine
  • Reduced engine power
  • Black smoke from the exhaust pipe
  • Smell of fuel in the cabin

Causes

  • Break or short circuit in the heater wiring
  • Failure of the heating element itself in the sensor
  • Corroded or oxidized sensor connectors
  • Engine ECU malfunction
  • Damage to the oxygen sensor due to contamination
  • Blown fuse in the heater circuit
  • Poor contact in the sensor connector

How to Fix

  1. Connect a diagnostic scanner and read all error codes
  2. Check the condition of the oxygen sensor circuit fuses
  3. Visually inspect the sensor wiring and connectors for damage.
  4. Measure the resistance of the heater with a multimeter (should be 2-14 Ohms)
  5. Check the supply voltage at the sensor connector (should be 12V)
  6. If necessary, clean the connectors from oxides and corrosion.
  7. Replace the oxygen sensor if a malfunction is detected
  8. Eliminate breaks or short circuits in the wiring
  9. Clear error codes and test drive to check
