Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light Is On
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Unstable engine operation at idle
  • Slowly warming up the engine to operating temperature
  • Deterioration in acceleration dynamics
  • Black smoke from the exhaust pipe

Causes

  • Burnt out oxygen sensor heating element
  • Open or short circuit in the wiring to the sensor
  • Oxidation or corrosion of connector contacts
  • Heater Circuit Fuse Malfunction
  • Damage to the oxygen sensor itself
  • Problems with the lambda probe heater relay

How to Fix

  1. Connect the diagnostic scanner and read the error codes
  2. Check the oxygen sensor heater circuit fuses.
  3. Measure the resistance of the sensor heating element (should be 2-14 Ohms)
  4. Check the integrity of the wiring from the ECU to the sensor
  5. Inspect connectors for oxidation and damage
  6. If necessary, replace the oxygen sensor
  7. Check the operation of the heater relay
  8. Clear error codes and test drive
