Symptoms
- Check Engine Light Is On
- Increased fuel consumption
- Unstable engine operation at idle
- Slowly warming up the engine to operating temperature
- Deterioration in acceleration dynamics
- Black smoke from the exhaust pipe
Causes
- Burnt out oxygen sensor heating element
- Open or short circuit in the wiring to the sensor
- Oxidation or corrosion of connector contacts
- Heater Circuit Fuse Malfunction
- Damage to the oxygen sensor itself
- Problems with the lambda probe heater relay
How to Fix
- Connect the diagnostic scanner and read the error codes
- Check the oxygen sensor heater circuit fuses.
- Measure the resistance of the sensor heating element (should be 2-14 Ohms)
- Check the integrity of the wiring from the ECU to the sensor
- Inspect connectors for oxidation and damage
- If necessary, replace the oxygen sensor
- Check the operation of the heater relay
- Clear error codes and test drive
