Symptoms

  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Unstable engine idling
  • Reduced engine power
  • Black smoke from the exhaust pipe
  • Dips during acceleration
  • Increased exhaust toxicity

Causes

  • Short circuit in oxygen sensor heater wiring
  • Malfunction of the oxygen sensor itself
  • Damage to the sensor connector or oxidation of contacts
  • Open heater ground circuit
  • Engine ECU malfunction
  • Damage to the wiring harness due to overheating or mechanical stress
  • Incorrect connection after repair

How to Fix

  1. Connect the diagnostic scanner and read the error codes
  2. Check the condition of the oxygen sensor connector bank 2, sensor 1
  3. Measure the resistance of the sensor heating element (usually 2-14 Ohms)
  4. Check the integrity of the wiring from the sensor to the ECU
  5. Measure the heater supply voltage (should be about 12V)
  6. Check the heater ground circuit for an open circuit.
  7. If necessary, replace the oxygen sensor
  8. Repair or replace damaged wiring
  9. Clear error codes and test drive
  10. Recheck the system with a diagnostic scanner
