Symptoms
- Check Engine Light Illuminates
- Increased fuel consumption
- Unstable engine idling
- Reduced engine power
- Black smoke from the exhaust pipe
- Dips during acceleration
- Increased exhaust toxicity
Causes
- Short circuit in oxygen sensor heater wiring
- Malfunction of the oxygen sensor itself
- Damage to the sensor connector or oxidation of contacts
- Open heater ground circuit
- Engine ECU malfunction
- Damage to the wiring harness due to overheating or mechanical stress
- Incorrect connection after repair
How to Fix
- Connect the diagnostic scanner and read the error codes
- Check the condition of the oxygen sensor connector bank 2, sensor 1
- Measure the resistance of the sensor heating element (usually 2-14 Ohms)
- Check the integrity of the wiring from the sensor to the ECU
- Measure the heater supply voltage (should be about 12V)
- Check the heater ground circuit for an open circuit.
- If necessary, replace the oxygen sensor
- Repair or replace damaged wiring
- Clear error codes and test drive
- Recheck the system with a diagnostic scanner
