HO2S Heater Control Circuit Range/Performance Bank 2 Sensor 2

Severity
Low

Do not drive — repair immediately
Approx. repair cost
$33–111 (est.)

Symptoms

  • Check Engine light on dashboard
  • Slow warming up of the oxygen sensor after starting the engine
  • Possible increased fuel consumption
  • Increased emissions of harmful substances
  • Scanner shows slow response of bank 2 sensor 2 on cold engine

Causes

  • Partial failure of the sensor heating element (increased resistance)
  • Weak contact in the heater circuit (oxidation of the connector)
  • Low voltage in the on-board network, insufficient for normal operation of the heater
  • Exhaust gases or moisture entering the sensor connector
  • Sensor aging (oxygen sensor service life 60,000–100,000 km)

How to Fix

  1. Read codes and compare with other oxygen sensor codes
  2. Check the voltage of the on-board network - it should be 13.5–14.5V with the engine running
  3. Measure the resistance of the heater of sensor 2 of bank 2 (standard 2–20 Ohms); increased value = heater degradation
  4. Check the sensor connector and wiring for oxidation and damage.
  5. Connect the scanner and observe the warm-up time of the sensor after a cold start
  6. If the heater is outside the norm or the sensor is old (>100,000 km), replace the oxygen sensor
