Symptoms

  • Check Engine light comes on
  • On-board voltage is unstable or below normal
  • Gradual discharge of the battery while the engine is running
  • Unstable operation of electrical equipment
  • Battery or charging indicator on panel

Causes

  • Worn brushes or alternator diode bridge
  • Alternator drive belt slipping or worn
  • Contamination or oxidation of sensor circuit terminals and connectors
  • Partial malfunction of the generator windings
  • Voltage regulator malfunction

How to Fix

  1. Check charging voltage under load (turn on lights, air conditioning, fan)
  2. Inspect the condition and tension of the generator drive belt
  3. Check the condition of the battery terminals and generator power wires
  4. Carry out a generator load test
  5. Check the generator voltage sensor signal with a scanner in the speaker
  6. If wear is confirmed, replace or repair the generator
