Symptoms

  • Check Engine light comes on
  • Squealing or squeaking noise from under the hood (belt slipping)
  • Reduced charging voltage at high loads
  • Traces of rubber or belt on the drive belt
  • Alternator drive belt heating

Causes

  • Alternator drive belt slipping or worn
  • Alternator Pulley Overrun Clutch Malfunction (OAD/OAP)
  • Wear or destruction of the generator bearing
  • Internal mechanical damage to the generator (rotor, stator)
  • Oily belt or pulley

How to Fix

  1. Inspect the generator drive belt for wear, oiliness and tension.
  2. Check the generator pulley for slipping (fix the rotor and check the free play of the pulley)
  3. Check the operation of the pulley overrunning clutch (if equipped)
  4. Listen to the generator for squeaking or whining (bearing failure)
  5. Replace the belt and tensioner if necessary
  6. If the overrunning clutch or bearing is faulty, repair or replace the generator
