Symptoms

  • Check Engine light comes on
  • Unstable or reduced voltage of the on-board network
  • Battery discharge during prolonged use
  • Flickering or unstable lighting
  • Battery or charging indicator on the instrument panel

Causes

  • Worn brushes or alternator diode bridge
  • Alternator drive belt slipping or worn
  • Partial malfunction of the generator windings (stator or rotor)
  • Voltage regulator malfunction
  • Weak battery with high internal resistance

How to Fix

  1. Check the voltage of the on-board network under various loads (headlights, climate, load test)
  2. Inspect the alternator belt and its tension
  3. Carry out a load test on the generator (charging current at high speed)
  4. Check the battery with a load tester
  5. Visually inspect the generator for signs of overheating or oil.
  6. If there is a malfunction, replace or repair the generator
