Symptoms

  • The engine cranks slowly or with difficulty
  • Starter relay clicking without cranking
  • Check Engine light on
  • Long scroll to launch
  • The engine cannot be started or requires multiple attempts

Causes

  • Worn or faulty starter
  • Low or faulty battery
  • High oil viscosity at low temperatures
  • Poor contact in the starter power circuit
  • Engine mechanical problems (increased friction)

How to Fix

  1. Check the battery voltage at rest (normal 12.4–12.7 V) and when cranking (not lower than 9.5 V)
  2. Check the condition and tension of the battery terminals
  3. Measure the starter current consumption when cranking (the rate depends on the engine size)
  4. Check the condition of the flywheel ring gear
  5. Check the ease of rotation of the engine manually
  6. Perform a battery load test
