Symptoms

  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Unstable engine idling
  • Reduced engine power
  • Increased exhaust emissions
  • Check Engine Light Illuminated
  • Long-term warming up of the engine to operating temperature

Causes

  • Faulty oxygen sensor bank 2 positions 3
  • Broken or damaged heater circuit wiring
  • Corrosion or oxidation of sensor connector contacts
  • Blown heater circuit fuse
  • Engine control unit (ECU) malfunction
  • Short circuit in the heater circuit to ground or positive
  • High resistance in the heater power circuit

How to Fix

  1. Connect the OBD scanner and read all error codes
  2. Check the oxygen sensor heater circuit fuses.
  3. Visually inspect the oxygen sensor and its wiring for damage.
  4. Check the resistance of the oxygen sensor heater (usually 2-14 ohms)
  5. Measure the supply voltage at the sensor connector (should be 12V)
  6. Check the integrity of the wiring from the ECU to the sensor
  7. Clean the connector contacts from corrosion and oxidation
  8. If necessary, replace the oxygen sensor
  9. Reset error codes and take a test drive
  10. Recheck the system with a scanner
