Symptoms

  • Check Engine light comes on
  • Reduced torque (valve stuck open) or maximum power (valve stuck closed)
  • The engine performs slightly worse in a certain rpm range
  • Otherwise the engine runs fine
  • Possible extraneous hum from the intake manifold

Causes

  • Open wire in valve solenoid control circuit
  • Broken valve solenoid winding
  • Lost contact in the IMTV valve solenoid connector
  • Blown solenoid circuit fuse (if equipped)
  • Malfunction of the ECU output stage (rare)

How to Fix

  1. Check the valve solenoid resistance with a multimeter (winding break)
  2. Check the voltage and presence of a control signal at the solenoid with the engine running
  3. Inspect the wiring and solenoid connector for breaks and oxidation.
  4. Check the solenoid circuit fuse
  5. If the wire is broken, repair or replace the wiring harness
  6. If the solenoid is faulty, replace the IMTV valve
